Review of Meeting- Tuesday September 1, 2020

Opening ceremonies were Bob Delisle singing the National Anthem, Roger Kauffman giving the invocation and Troy assessing fines for misdemeanors. A highlight was the presentation of a Paul Harris Award posthumously to Elijah Cummings , which was accepted by his widow Dr Maya Rockeymoore Cummings. Participating in the presenting of the award were Sandy Short, Debbie Burgess,Theron Russell and others. In thanking the Baltimore Rotary club for the award Ms Cummings discussed hisĀ  early life and the difficulties facing afro-americans. She also related her early upbringing as a military brat while her dad was in the Air Force. She pointed out that the military was first to integrate and proved it possible. She said that unity and equity are the future of democracy and without democracy freedom is not possible. She also mentioned the current level of racial inequality, the conflict between black men and the police and the lack of respect for science. She called for a declaration inclusion and interdependence as we are one people. 30 rotarians heard an excellent talk on a very current topic.
